Data Literacy has been a very popular skill lately. Although not as appealing in name as other hard and soft skills, it currently represents a defining moment for most companies.
Data Literacy is a direct consequence of digitization and the growing amount of data existing in organizations. In an increasingly data-oriented society that bases its performance metrics on information in the form of “zeros and ones”, knowing how analyze data should not be neglected.
Data Literacy is the ability to read, write and communicate in the data context. It is understanding what data are, how to minimally comprehend them and knowing what value can be extracted from them in order to leverage companies. It is also knowing – albeit globally – the main data analysis techniques and how they can help us in the real world.
From the customers’ point of view, there are a whole set of benefits of having this skill:
- It is possible for them to perceive what kind of strategic indications are provided by data;
- It is possible for them to understand how they can be helped in terms of data analysis or Artificial Intelligence;
- It is possible for them to transform their problems into data language and thus ask experts exactly what they want;
- Employees with adequate literacy can be proactive agents in order to make a company a data-oriented organization, from its storage to its operation.
The opposite is also true: agencies working with data gain whenever their clients are more informed:
- With customer literacy, it is easier for them to present advanced analytics solutions and techniques that help implement Digital Transformation in companies;
- It is easier to explain the end result of their work;
- They more easily obtain the much-desired buy-in from top hierarchies.
Data Literacy in Portuguese companies and public bodies is low, very low. Intelligent Algorithms regards this as a loss of potential to compete in the European economy. But it intends to be part of the solution.

Bearing this in mind, 2022 will embody a mission we are willing to fulfill: to help all companies for which data is still something intangible and “nebulous”.
- We are working on creating content with the aim of increasing Data Literacy;
- We are finishing and will launch a free checkup in February, in which companies can assess how efficient they are in taking advantage of their data (and what measures/actions should be taken in order to become more efficient and sustainable);
- An ebook on Data Science and Artificial Intelligence is currently being edited;
- Periodically, small handouts on data analysis techniques will be presented in our articles: what they are, how they work and what they are for.
